Lovely Calendula

Lovely Calendula
From Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale:
‘The Marigold that goes to bed wi’ th’ sun,
And with him rises weeping.’

I love it when a bee just happens to be in the photograph. The seeds from the Calendula blow and come up everywhere. I love the products that contain Calendula flowers, especially their handcream. I've heard of Baby Balm for lips and diaper rash.

Did you know that the calendula (marigold) is available in two colors, yellow and orange?Have you seen some in red?

"Marigold, calendula officinalis L. H (Calendulae flos) The plant and the drug Calendula officinalis (Scotch or 'pot') marigold is one of the best known medicinal plants of Europe and has a long tradition of pharmaceutical use. Its origin is unclear and it has been cultivated for many centuries. Consequently, many varieties exist and its usage as an ornamental has increased the botanical variance in the species. The flower heads are relatively large, with a diameter of up to 5 cm, and yellow-orange."

The common name marigold probably refers to the Virgin Mary, or its old Saxon name 'ymbglidegold', which means 'it turns with the sun'. (I love this!)

  6. Marigolds always seem like a happy flower to me. I wasn't aware of the medicinal uses. A friend of mind had some red ones one year and they were beautiful.
