365 Devotions for Finding Rest: Review

365 Devotions for Finding Rest

This beautiful book is just what I needed! Have a peek if you are need of rest! I have reviewed many devotionals over the years and I really love this one.

Book Description

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

—Matthew 11:28

Rest. You crave it. Your body needs it. Your tired soul longs for it. But in the madness of your day-to-day rush, how can you possibly find it? Truth be told, when life’s demands overwhelm us, the first thing we sacrifice is our own rest. But God has a different plan for us: He made us to enjoy deep, reviving refreshment in Him. 365 Devotions for Finding Rest will guide you in a yearlong journey toward embracing His rest in your life. You’ll be amazed as God’s peace and restoration transform you.

Book Intro

"Rest. What happens when you hear that word? Do you immediately dismiss the idea, thinking it will never happen for you? After all, you think, my life is too busy for me to take a break and rest. Or does your heart cry out in longing? Does your body crave a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of your days? Does your entire being desperately desire rest?

Book Review

A beautiful hardcover devotional is sure to please everyone on your gift-giving list. It is very well organized with wonderful bold titles highlighted in blue. There is a scripture index in the back of the book. On each page are insightful, encouraging snippets that will leave your soul refreshed, hopeful and renewed. Most importantly, the scriptures will give you a word picture of what rest looks like and you'll embark on a journey experiencing rest for the soul!

5/5 stars. Highly recommend. Purchase book, here.
I received the book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review.

God is for the Alcoholic: Review

Back Cover

" I discovered this for myself at the conclusion of a two-year drunk when I picked up a Bible in a Texas prison more than sixteen years ago. I have seen it proved over and over again in the lives of men and women in every stratum of our society. There is hope for the alcoholic and his bewildered, suffering family." -- Jerry Dunn
These are the words of the author. From years of practical experience, Jerry Dunn outlines the course - and the cure. The road up from the abyss may be long and difficult, but it is there, plainly marked and simple to follow. God provides the way of escape. God Is for the Alcoholic points the way.

God is for the Alcoholic

My Thoughts

There are three parts to the book, with 5-6 chapters under each segment. It can be somewhat of a painful journey but along the way, I think you'll discover some points to ponder that will give you that 'Ah-hah' moment...

Part 1

  • Understanding Alcoholism
Part 11

  • Five Ways To Help The Alcoholic

Part 111

  • Five Ways The Alcoholic Can Help Himself
I think it is the best book on the market for personal information to help you understand the many complexities of friends and family members who suffer deeply from addictions, especially alcohol. It is raw and truthful, insightful and hopeful. I highly recommend it. 5/5 stars!

It is interesting to note that history reveals that sixteen civilizations have fallen because of drunkenness.

Streams in the Desert: LadyD Books

On my bookshelf, you'll find 2 copies of Streams in the Desert. The 1997 edition, Streams in the Desert (edited by James Reiman and I have an old hardcover version that is copyrighted, 1925. The book is written by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman.

The book is about private devotional reading for the family. It's been the best-selling daily devotional book for more than fifty years.

Streams in the Desert offers...

  • 365 inspired meditations of encouragement
  • Practical directives for inner peace and certainty
  • A tried formula for successful living

"As he read the letter, his face was the face of a victor. No, mamma, didn't I tell you?" came from the depths of a heart that never doubted, that, "against hope, believed in hope" that the stamp album would come. While he was trusting, grandma was working, and in due season faith became sight."
What I love the most about this beautiful devotional is the dedication. I want to share it with you now...

Dedication to the Updated Edition

To Aaron, my second-born son. You have endured a great deal this past year: a sudden brain aneurysm and massive hemorrhage, surgery, and an on-going recovery period. Yet through it all, you have been a joy to all of us who love you and evidence of God's loving protection. You have not complained but have been a living example of the Spirit of God having His perfect way in the heart of a child of His. May the Lord continue to use your life as a testimony to others of Christ's enduring power and grace.

Sometimes the Lord's way is hard,Leading through many stresses and storms; But Satan's harsh touch is barred,And God's character He surely forms.
Though you nearly tasted death,You've learned how God sovereignly spares; He renewed your life and breath,Displaying how graciously He cares.
Yet today still unrevealed,He has made for you a perfect plan;Just follow the path He's willed,And you'll soon become a godly man. -- James Reimann

The Dynamic Studio: Book Review

The Dynamic Studio l LadyD Books

I am a firm believer that piano lessons were never meant to be boring!! Love this book!

About The Book

How to keep students, dazzle parents, and build the music studio everyone wants to get into.
Practice Revolution author Philip Johnston looks at 93 different elements of traditional music teaching that are desperately in need of an update for today's students.
From motivation systems to resourcing, repertoire selection to the practice treadmill, unconventional scheduling to simply how to make a studio more fun, The Dynamic Studio is another explosion of ideas from the world’s best-known writer on music teaching.

"In most of the ways that count for anything, they're actually from the same planet."
"This disjuncture  between what our training has prepared us for and who we are actually working with has very real consequences for music teachers individually and the profession as a whole.

My Review

It's a different day! As we recognize the times they are a changin'... So is our fresh approach to piano teaching! The author captures the vision perfectly here! Get a breakthrough on the old, static way we do things to springing forward to having a dynamic studio. When this goal grabs ahold of you, engaging students will become the main focus here. My favorite line in the book, "It's your studio; you decide what happens." You'll come away with a feeling of being recharged as you change things around in your studio. Get the book. It doesn't disappoint! Your passion for teaching will continue to soar and your teacher-student relationships will grow successfully in helping them to enjoy all kinds of music their entire lives! I found The Dynamic Studio to be a positive, refreshing change for piano teachers!

Friday #56

"She wanted to get the name of the woman who had relieved her fear on the telephone. "I'd like to thank her," she explained to Collyn's teacher.

The teacher looked at Lynne in bewilderment. "But you couldn't have spoken with anyone," she said.

"Oh, but I did," Lynne assured her. "You can ask my older boys. I was frantic until this woman assured me that Collyn was fine."

"Mrs. Coates, that would have been impossible," the teacher insisted. "We put a sign on the door, locked the building, and moved the children before the tornado struck. There wasn't anyone here.

"And don't forget - our phone lines were destroyed. No call could have gotten through - or been answered."

Angels have been called our "companions in a storm." The Coates family knows, in a special way, what that lovely promise means.

Book Review

Truly a book that will lift your spirit! So many moving passages within the pages to refresh your thirsty soul. Recorded true stories shared by famous authors and pastors will encourage your faith. For sure, so many of us can testify to angels ministering to us in our time of need... Some visible and others not seen but behind the scenes. After reading numerous accounts of visiting angels affecting changed lives, the reader can decide if, in fact, the accounts shared here are believable or merely coincidental. Get the book. You will not be disappointed.

The Unique Woman: Book Review

The Unique Woman by Edwin Louis Cole

Intro

In 1994 my female doctor at that time wanted to share this book with me. She already had a copy of her own, so we found ourselves reading it together. Her hopes were to encourage us on our quest to be Godly women instead of the American woman. I'm not sure what all that means. I can honestly say I'm a Christian (believer in Christ) and I'm Greek, born in the USA. I guess the book is an oldie and the cost of it is a pretty penny, The Unique Woman.

What The Book Is About

"Ours is a world of disposable diapers, disposable razors, and disposable women. Women are deserted and discarded every day. Convenience outweighs commitment."
"You have more than you think you have. You can do more than you think you can. You alone are responsible, to use the intelligence, talents, abilities, and gifts, God has given to you."
"There is only one true standard, one great authority, one perfect justice, one source of power that is able to withstand and outlast the tests of time, pressures of society, ever-changing authorities, and fluctuations in the world. That authority and power are found in Jesus Christ - Savior of all, Lord of Life --- and in His eternal truth."

"It was tough. Love is tough. Speaking the truth in love heals, not wounds. Truth may be hard to swallow --- but then, most medicines are."

Book Review

I'm liking the book and its take on celebrating women's uniqueness. The author makes the point that men need to find a creative way to say "I love you" to their wives that will affirm them being special.
So many insights and truths here to build and strengthen your marriage. Valuable tips to cultivate a successful Christian walk with love, truthfulness, and Godliness. I recommend it for home and church library. 5/5 stars.

"April has helped to form me into a better person. Her kindness, beauty, and ability to do anything she sets her mind to, make me determined to follow in her footsteps."
Book Review

The author is writing to his daughter about their life together in the Appalachian Mountains. I love his word crafting because you feel like you are present in the moment with him. He encourages kindness and respect to be passed down from generation to generation. I especially like the survival training and lifestyle shared between a father and daughter. I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this. It's written from the heart and quite charming. The book makes a great gift for a child or grandchild, too. I really enjoyed it and recommend. "In a large mixing bowl, gently mix the quinoa with the tomatoes, avocado, olives and mozzarella pieces. Spoon in the pesto and toss to distribute it evenly."
-- From the recipe, Quinoa with Oven Roasted tomatoes and Pesto.

I love soup and salad. From this cookbook by Vesela Tabakova is a salad recipe on Page 56 that I wanted to share with you. It's quite easy to prepare.

Quinoa with Oven Roasted Tomatoes and Pesto

serves 6

Ingredients:

for the salad

1 cup dry quinoa
2 cups water
1 cup cherry tomatoes, for roasting
1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, fresh
1 avocado, cut into chunks
1/2 cup black olives, pitted
1 cup mozzarella cheese, cut into bite size pieces

for the pesto

1 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup walnuts, toasted
1 cup basil leaves
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp mustard
4-6 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp savory
2 tbsp water (optional)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with foil. Make sure the tomatoes are completely dry, then drizzle with olive oil and savory and toss to coat them all. Bake the tomatoes for about 20 mins., flipping once, until they are brown. Sprinkle with salt.

Rinse quinoa very well in a fine mesh strainer under running water; set aside to drain. Place two cups of water and quinoa in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to the boil then reduce heat to low. Simmer for fifteen minutes. Set aside, covered, for ten minutes and fluff with a fork.

Make the pesto by placing garlic, walnuts and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a food processor. Add basil, mustard, and lemon juice and blend in batches until smooth. Add oil, one tablespoon at a time, processing between, until the pesto is lightened and creamy. For an even lighter texture, you can add two tablespoons of water. Taste for salt and add more if you like.

In a large mixing bowl, gently mix the quinoa with the tomatoes, avocado, olives and mozzarella pieces. Spoon in the pesto and toss to distribute it evenly.

Book Review

I am a huge fan of soups and salads, especially the Greek Chickpea Salad. If you like Mediterranean food, along with some Asian ones, you'll like the simple recipes here. The homemade flavorful vegetarian soups are so delicious and the veggie salad types are very good. The ingredients are not too costly to purchase and the preparation time is minimal. Families will enjoy being served these healthy meals from this excellent book bundle. I enjoyed the books and I'm glad I have them in my Kindle library for quick reference. Overall, real nice books but I just wish there were beautiful food photos to see.

"Your sisters were taught to be a good wife and mother. Father said it was a waste of time to educate a girl since their opinions didn't matter."

My Favorite Line

"Music was very important to bring harmony into people's lives. You loved hearing the bells and chimes. They used flutes and a stringed instrument called a gungin (gew-gin) which made you thoughtful when you heard it."

My Review

Such an excellent pastel palette of colorful and detailed illustrations framing a charming story of informative Chinese Cultural Beauty and History for children and adults to understand.
The glossary in the end notes is a great addition to the reader and very helpful, too. Kids will learn a lot of facts about the Chin Dynasty 1900 years ago but it's presented with simple elegance as to not overload. It's no wonder the Han Dynasty, called the Golden Age of Ancient China lasted over 400 years. Topics on food, clothing, and shelter are a nice highlight to the story line. The customs and legends weave a golden thread along The Silk Road and The Lantern Festival, as you view how life in Ancient China really was. I enjoyed the book immensely and will share it with my grandchildren.

Prince Noah and the School Pirates Review

Prince Noah and the School Pirates: Silke Schnee l LadyD Books

I was so excited to hear the good news from Maureen Swinger, editor of Plough Publishing House, that I had won a copy of Prince Noah and the School Pirates in a LibraryThing giveaway!!

About The Book

It’s time for young Prince Noah to go to school. The prince, who starred in the book The Prince Who Was Just Himself, may be a little slower than other students, but he has no less joy in learning. In his kingdom, children go to school on sailing ships. There is a ship for girls and one for boys. There is a ship for children with an eye patch, a ship for children with one leg, and a ship for children who are slower learners. No one knows why there are so many different ships, but it has always been that way.

Then a terrible storm drives the ships into the hands of pirates. The boys and girls realize that they will only escape if everyone does what he or she does best. Through their adventures, they learn that diversity makes us strong and that every person has something to teach us.

This delightfully illustrated fairy tale instills the appreciation for children with Down syndrome and other developmental challenges, making it a valuable aid for teaching tolerance in the home or classroom.

Book Description

The young prince with Down syndrome goes to school – and saves the day once again, by helping to rescue his classmates from a band of pirates.

"A gentle fairy tale about a young prince with Down syndrome who saves his kingdom from a menacing knight…. [It] offers a special needs child in a positive, starring role and can be read simply as a satisfying fairy tale…. The author, herself the mother of a child with Down syndrome, and the illustrator ably introduce a difficult subject in a fictional context with a light, sure touch." (The Prince Who Was Just Himself) (Kirkus Reviews)

The Friday #56

"Prince Noah beamed as he raised his hands and began to dance. And if he hasn't stopped dancing yet, he is dancing still."

My Review

The author has cleverly structured a community of school ships that house kids that are different than normal children for their studies. Those who are blind or have trouble walking go to different ships, too. I think sometimes we compartmentalize special needs kids from a distance because they are different from us and we don't know how to interact with them... but I've learned that what makes us different makes us beautiful! While the students are isolated in their 'floating' schools, they quickly discover their own unique, special giftedness and rapidly grow in confidence and strength with new discoveries in seeing what they do well. Later on, a conflict arises through a storm at sea whereby a group of pirates took command of all ships. Learn how dancing, learning and laughing together brings strength and unity through diversity. I love this very inspirational story for children and parents from this brilliant author. It's a great addition to the home and school library. The illustrations are quite nice, too. I plan to give the book as a gift to my grandson Noah (whose name is like the main character in the book) because he has a special need's big brother whom he loves dearly who has Cornelia deLang Syndrome. Together they enjoy learning and exploring the pirate life of adventure! Young readers will be reminded of the power of kindness and working together as a team. Great book!

5/5 stars! Highly recommend.

Book Review: Vegangelical

Vegangelical: LadyD Books

Vegangelical

How caring for animals can shape your faith.

Book Description
Among the many pressing social concerns that have galvanized evangelical Christians’ response—abortion, human trafficking, environmental degradation, and many others—the care of animals has received relatively little attention.
Yet as author Sarah Withrow King deftly uncovers in Vegangelical, animal stewardship is a necessary aspect of a holistic ethic of Christian peace and justice. Indeed, care for animal welfare correspondingly strengthens our care for environmental and human flourishing.
Practical, restrained in its conclusions, and grounded on a broader theology of Christian compassion, Vegangelical calls readers to a greater attentiveness to one of the primary relationships in God’s created order, that between humans and animals.

"If you think the way I used to, this is a comfortable interpretation and one that might not require us to change much about what we do or how we live."
I remember when I was a vegetarian... oh, so long ago. My entire Greek family thought I had gone bonkers, over-the-top. crazy!! I have made tons of chicken shish kebobs over the years and have roasted  leg of lamb for Easter each year. Not to mention, calamari and other delicious Greek food. Needless to say, I was very intrigued by the title of the book and really wanted to know this gals approach. Here's what I gleaned...

My Review

The author has organized the contents of the book in two parts: Theological Foundation and Using Animals. Sarah is a Christina and an animal activist (PETA). I enjoyed reading about not eating meat and dairy from her perspective and opinion. Her style of writing is a bit confusing at first because there's so much information regarding much animal abuse and tons of scripture sprinkled throughout the book. Then towards the end, we hear about the reasons why the author is a vegan and recommends this kind lifestyle.

But the main focus is on 3 biblical principles:

1. Image Dei: What does it mean to be made in the image of a Trinitarian God, and how ought that inform our treatment of animals?

Have you ever thought before about what happens to animals before they end up on our plates? What was your thought process?
Would you be willing and/or able to kill an animal to eat him or her? Why or why not?
If you are vegetarian or vegan now, why did you stop eating animals?
If you are not a vegetarian or vegan now, why not?

John 17:26

The content is helpful in learning why so many of my friends have turned towards this lifestyle. Overall, the discussion questions are good but I felt the flow of the storyline was written at a sporadic pace, jumping all over the place. The book is not for everyone.

4/5 stars.

For Skywatch Friday... With hot temps and wildfires surrounding SoCal, we have been experiencing cooler temps providing some relief. So warm and dry where I live. How is it where you are?

Happy Reading and Skywatching!
