Book Review: Devotions from the Beach

100 Devotions from the Beach

Book Information

Life is better at the beach—but you already knew that. Dig your feet in the sand, and let the water cool your toes as you escape in the beauty of God's seaside wonders. The gorgeous photography and 100 devotions in Devotions from the Beach will take you right to the water's edge, where God's voice is often clearer than ever.

Book Review

There are 100 devotionals inside, so start reading wherever you want to. If you enjoy pleasant walks along the shoreline, you will enjoy reading "Follow Those footprints." Within the pages are a scripture verse, writings around a beach theme that relates to the Bible, and a closing prayer. I especially like the "Driftwood" devotional because of its refreshing and courageous encouragement for a closer walk with the Lord. The photos are absolutely gorgeous and meditating on God's word is a true treasure to know Him and have His peace. I love the devotional and it definitely makes an excellent gift, too.

5/5 stars. Highly recommend.

Restoration Year

Book Review

What gorgeous artwork on the outer covering of this beautiful hardcover devotional book! Plus, the inside layout appearance is easy to navigate through with daily readings upon each page for the entire year. The endnotes include a prayer, bibliography, books by the author, and sources by date. A ribbon bookmark is quite useful, too. What I especially like are a simple topic title at the top of each page, below that is scripture, then John's inspiring writings, and toward the bottom of the page, you'll find a prayer or a question. I find John's writings simple, yet complex at times, and I am eager to read more. The details in his word craftmanship are brilliant. He shows us our limited understanding as we ponder through our own point of view. But always John points us to God's perspective in His word. It's God's word that brings us an unquenchable hope. I think this is why this particular devotional is so special! Highly recommend Restoration Year!

My Thoughts

This is a 52-week devotional-journal for parents to use with their children. It is an awesome book full of relevant scriptures for today. I find it very engaging with my grandchildren ages 5-12. The author weaves great practical insights for children to grasp and apply right where they're at. Not only is Susan's word crafting great but I find the illustrations that one can print out and color of excellent quality. I especially love the graphic on dependability. This is a fun approach to training young minds to read the Bible more and more. I love this devotional and highly recommend for home and Sunday School library. Makes a great gift, too.

Streams in the Desert Dedication

Streams in the Desert: LadyD Books

On my bookshelf, you'll find 2 copies of Streams in the Desert. The 1997 edition, Streams in the Desert (edited by James Reiman and I have an old hardcover version that is copyrighted, 1925. The book is written by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman.

The book is about private devotional reading for the family. It's been the best-selling daily devotional book for more than fifty years.

Streams in the Desert offers...

  • 365 inspired meditations of encouragement
  • Practical directives for inner peace and certainty
  • A tried formula for successful living

"As he read the letter, his face was the face of a victor. No, mamma, didn't I tell you?" came from the depths of a heart that never doubted, that, "against hope, believed in hope" that the stamp album would come. While he was trusting, grandma was working, and in due season faith became sight."
What I love the most about this beautiful devotional is the dedication. I want to share it with you now...

Dedication to the Updated Edition

To Aaron, my second-born son. You have endured a great deal this past year: a sudden brain aneurysm and massive hemorrhage, surgery, and an on-going recovery period. Yet through it all, you have been a joy to all of us who love you and evidence of God's loving protection. You have not complained but have been a living example of the Spirit of God having His perfect way in the heart of a child of His. May the Lord continue to use your life as a testimony to others of Christ's enduring power and grace.

Sometimes the Lord's way is hard,Leading through many stresses and storms; But Satan's harsh touch is barred,And God's character He surely forms.
Though you nearly tasted death,You've learned how God sovereignly spares; He renewed your life and breath,Displaying how graciously He cares.
Yet today still unrevealed,He has made for you a perfect plan;Just follow the path He's willed,And you'll soon become a godly man. -- James Reimann

The Gift for All People: Book Review

The Gift for All People: Max Lucado l LadyD Books

Yes, it's that special time of year for us in celebrating the resurrection of Christ. It's a personal time of reflection, a wonderful celebration with family and friends and the Easter egg hunt is always fun for the grandkids! I especially enjoy those relaxing moments and sitting down with a good book. I've read tons of Max Lucado books in the past and love them all. This Is a more recent one I just finished reading.

A New View on the Old Rugged Cross

Are peace, joy, and significance on your wish list?  How about redemption, forgiveness, the salvation of your soul?  Each of these descriptors bring us to the main event:  grace.  Saving grace, God’s immeasurable gift intended for all.  Regardless of accomplishments or station in life, despite sins of the past, anyone can receive the free gift of grace.
Yet too often we take God’s incomparable gift for granted—despite the fact that God’s very Son paid for it with his body, breath, and blood. Understandably, we often find ourselves caught up in the daily routine of life, not taking time to reflect on the enormity of God’s mercy.
So here’s a suggestion:  give yourself the gift of a few moments spent in the world of God’s grace.  Read pastor Max Lucado’s unique, stirring insights into God’s role as grace-giver. Spend some time reflecting on the gift of grace, in all its magnificent meaning.
Let grace, the gift for all people, speak to you personally through these pages.

For All People—Even You

God loves you more than you can imagine.

Is that hard to believe?   Many of us consider ourselves unworthy due to past sins and mistakes, wrong turns and missteps.,
But God’s gift of grace is limitless.  Though we are undeserving, he offers grace.  Though we are weak in our faith, he extends strength through grace. God’s endless grace is a free gift.  It cannot be earned.
No matter who you are or what you’ve done, the all-powerful God waits for you to choose him, to choose life in his presence—here and in heaven.

“[God] simply wants you home with him. And to bring you home, he offers you a gift. My prayer is that through these pages you’ll see his gift like you’ve never seen it. If you’ve already accepted it, you’ll thank him again. And if you’ve never accepted it, you will. For it’s the gift of a lifetime, a gift for all people.”

—Max Lucado

"Yet somehow, despite all the pain, Jesus was able to see good in the bad, the purpose in the pain, and God's presence in the problem."

My Review

So many powerful words are written in the short chapters here. They are very touching and life changing. The focus of the book is about Jesus loving us, His immeasurable gift of love and His free gift of grace setting us free. The stories are very warm and personable. I love all of Max Lucado books and this one is an easy read. It is simplistic in word crafting and powerfully effective in grabbing your heart and changing your life. Jesus invites you to choose Him. Salvation is a gift for all people. Get the book because it's relevant for today and may minister to your heart where you are on your life's journey of seeking truth and coping in an ever changing world!

5/5 stars. Highly recommend.

Friday 56: Devotions from the Garden

Devotions from the Garden

I love to read devotionals and this one is excellent from Thomas Nelson Publishers. I especially like it because of the way the scriptural reading ties in with gardening concepts. The book meme entry is from the chapter called, Repellers. From Psalm 12:7, "You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked."

For one whole week our granddaughter came for a visit. We were so blessed to see her again. These were taken at the Safari Park. I really enjoy seeing the natural landscape since SoCal is experiencing a drought!

Safari Park Landscape

Rock bedding

Yellow plants and palm trees

Book Description

Come to the garden alone, and fill your soul with His presence.
There's nothing on earth like the peace and loveliness of a magnificent garden. It's the place where Adam and Eve first fellowshipped with God, and where you, too, can escape from this chaotic world into His loving arms of beauty and serenity. Devotions from the Garden takes you to that place where senses are restored as dewdrops settle and butterflies gather to witness the miracles of God's creation bloom and grow. These ninety devotions explore the parallels of life with the elements of the garden to help you see God, to sense His presence, to soothe your soul, and to rest in knowing He is with you throughout each day. Included are striking photographs with a fresh, contemporary design for timeless appeal.

Friday #56

"All the repellers God puts into your life, however, are tangible evidence that He loves you enough to provide guidance and protection during times of difficulty, doubt, decision making, or when the enemy is on the attack." -- Miriam Drennan
Beginning Snippet

"Citronella, lemongrass, purple artist ageratum, marigolds - these are just a few of the plants that naturally repel pests like mosquitoes and nematodes and keep them from destroying the more vulnerable plants in the garden. Gardeners know to include such plants alongside their vegetables, fruits, and cutting flowers."

Ending Prayer

"Holy Father, thank You for _____. Thank You for the time, wisdom, and encouragement they've given me. Help me never to take them for granted. And help me either return the favor or help others in the same way they have helped me. In fact, reveal to me anyone who may need me to be a repeller - and then enable me to be effective."

Review

This is a great, inspiring devotional. I especially like how the author links gardening concepts with scripture. There's tons of Biblical references that go hand in hand with visual gardening tips. The beautiful illustrations make the book a most excellent gift. I am fond of meditating and reflecting upon the miracle of growth. Plus, the necessity to maintenance of plant care is quite informative and easy to apply in a practical sense; like crop rotation, companion planting, pinching and deadheading. I think we're all familiar with He is the vine, we are the branches. What I found within the pages is peace, rest and refreshment in reading about God's presence in the beauty of nature. You'll love it!

5/5 stars! A quality devotional I recommend to friends.

God's Beloved Daughters

God's Beloved Daughters

Book Description

Both a daily devotional and an in-depth Bible study, God’s Beloved Daughters is a tool “to strengthen and establish and to exhort and comfort and encourage you in your faith” (I Thessalonians 3:2). Wife, mother, student, teacher, lawyer, doctor, businesswoman, pastor – despite all of these titles, there is one role that takes priority over all others – daughter! Our heavenly identity not only defines and characterizes every other relationship we take part in, it prioritizes our daily motivation.

The Friday #56 (56% e-reader)

"Whenever my children were veering a bit off the path of expected behavior - a temper tantrum, a sulk, an obvious trifling with worldly values - an honest and open conversation with them reviewing together expectations and the right way to go always restored them to the better way, and to peace."
My Review

Wonderful words of love and encouragement are discovered within the pages of this beautiful devotional. I found it to be true that with daily reading comes reflection with an opportunity for personal application. You'll discover a new attitude (faith builder) being shaped within you in honoring your creator. Plus, a peace and graciousness that will abide with you in quiet confidence in learning more about truth. Reading God's word will free you from fears and moral conflicts. Who wouldn't want to be elegant and gentle with their reaction towards harsh, abrasive criticism. The more into the book you get, you'll find yourself rejoicing with a happy heart. Overall, this special devotional will energize your spirit as you understand scripture. I believe the author's heart desire is for God's word to change your life with a powerful renewed perspective. May it color your day in understanding His great love for you as you center your time in reading this awesome devotional!

5/5 stars! Highly recommend to friends. The author has a special testimony and sensitive writing skill of communicating.

Friday #56

"Suppose you get a Save the Date card from Jesus. What does he want you to save Sunday for?"
This is a spectacular idea for a young tween to write on a postcard what she will be doing with her Sunday. Taken from Scripture: "Remember the sabbath day by keeping it holy Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work." Exodus 20:8-10

Just Sayin': Write 'Em, Draw 'Em, Hide 'Em in Your Heart

My Review

A refreshing new approach in studying scripture for young girls by writing and drawing your thoughts down in a fun devotional journal! I love the book with its unique illustrations and creative fonts. If you're a visual learner, you'll be captivated and drawn in to learn more of God's word. The author thinks outside the box and connects with tweens in such a clever manner by inviting young people to be creative on each page in dissecting God's word. Personal application stimulates girls to follow Jesus and experience His love for them through this very cool devotional. Great for home and church library, too.

Built on the hope-infusing truths found in the 2012 Retailer's Choice Winner, A Confident Heart, Renee Swope's new 60-day devotional takes women on a journey toward lasting confidence. Swope has expanded her popular "When I say--God says" statements and Scriptures, and offers women a daily thought-map to help them exchange their most common and crippling self-doubts with God's transforming truths.

Like having a conversation with a friend and mentor, Renee's authentic style and soul-stirring devotions include personal stories, powerful biblical teaching, and real-life application wrapped around one of God's promises each day to help readers:

•live confidently in their God-given roles, relationships and responsibilities
•break free from people-pleasing and performance-based living
•believe God's promises and apply his truth in their daily lives
•trust the certainty of God's truth over their circumstances and emotions

The Friday 56

I'm looking forward to reading more of Renee's writings on the subject of a confident heart. I just started the book, so here's a blurb from 56% on my reader:
"My unhealthy mindset made it hard to forgive, because I replayed hurtful words and situations in my mind over and over. It's very difficult (if not impossible!) to forgive what you regularly focus on." -- Renee Swope

clouds in northern sky: LadyD Books

This is a northern view from our ranch, looking towards some of our other neighbors on the hill. Where I live, we're zoned so that others may build on their 2-acre parcel of land all around us. Today has been such a pretty day and I just love looking out at these puffy, heart clouds.

strawberry field: LadyD Books

Although some of the avocado groves are being cut down, you can see the farmer's working hard on another new season of strawberries... Can't wait for the harvest!

Do you like avocados and strawberries?

Have a wonderful weekend,

Book Review: Just Like Jesus Devotional

Just Like Jesus Devotional: LadyD Books

 About The Book:

God wants to give you a heart just like Jesus.
Jesus felt no guilt; God wants you to feel no guilt.
Jesus had no bad habits; God wants to do away with yours.
Jesus had no fears; God wants the same for you.
Jesus had no anxiety about death; you needn't either.

My Review

I felt a need to grow deeper in my faith and this special devotional showed me my need to have a listening heart. If you want more of God in your life, then you'll really want to get to know Him, by listening and praying to Him. The more I read, I began to see that my nature and heart responses were not always like the heart of Jesus but I wanted it to be so. The confidence and hope I gained through this study (daily spending more time with God), is that He promises to change me completely to be like Him, when I will be in His presence one day. In the meantime, as a worshiper, He changes our faces through worship and He changes those who watch us worship. I love this part. I highly recommend "a thirty day walk" for a personal study and a deeper awareness to be like Christ.

About The Author

In just under two decades of writing, Max Lucado has accomplished more than most writers hope for in a lifetime. Most of his books have appeared on one or more best seller lists, including those published by the "New York Times," "USA Today," "Publishers Weekly," and the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA). Aside from hardcover books, Lucado's writings have also been published as children's books, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, music CDs, mass paperback booklets, apparel, giftware, bookmarks, calendars, study Bibles, workbooks, curricula, and plush products. In spring 2003, Hallmark/Dayspring Cards launched a new gift card line featuring excerpts from Lucado's writings--and has already sold more than one million cards.

Additional Readings
