Let's Get Ready For Bed: Book Review

I was so excited to receive this book today from BookLook Bloggers! I am very familiar with Michael W. Smith's songwriting talents and was eager to read some of his word craftings! I quickly discovered within a few moments that this had to be the sweetest bedtime story with a song!

What's It About?

Book Review

The book begins with two friends, Lamby the sheep, and Eddy the bear looking for Sleepy Puppy. They find him taking a bubble bath, dressing in warm jammies, brushing teeth, and then lovingly saying his prayers of protection for his friends. The illustrations are bright and beautiful. The story nurtures wee people towards personal hygiene, bedtime routines, and thoughtfulness towards others. My favorite part of the book is the Rock-a-bye goodnight lullaby serenade from Sleepy Puppy's good friends. A sweet book and just right for my five-year-old grandson!

5/5 stars. Highly recommend!

Book Review

I am a Fallbrook resident and shop at Major Market. My husband bought the book for me because he knows I am a huge fan of Rita Coolidge. I have one of her records and love to sing along. Reading Delta Lady was a huge revelation of a beautiful woman's life journey of music success and hardship. I appreciated Rita's genuine and sincere approach of sharing copyright issues, intimate relationships with band members, family background and the overall sensational sounds of the 70s. Being close to the same age, I could relate to the music of the times and how it made us feel back then. All 10 chapters are very informative and revealing. I rejoice with Rita's triumphs and have shed some tears in learning of some painful parts to her story. I hope to meet Rita one day in our beautiful community because I would like to tell her how much her memoirs touched my heart.

I love the book and highly recommend it to all music fans. 5/5 stars!

A Norah Jones Sunrise

 "Sunrise" is the first single of Norah Jones' multi-platinum album Feels like Home. I just love her style.

An amazing sunrise for January looking eastward toward a local mountain range. The palm tree and avocado branch add that special touch, reminding me of country living here in SoCal.

My Review

The book shares 27 short profiles of legendary artists and their music that changed the world, including my life. It's a great reference book, like an encyclopedia for young musicians. You'll take a look at a timeline of mega-gifted artists who shared strong cultural messages of the day while others communicated from their own personal challenges. You can easily pick up the book and read anywhere about the cutting edge of performance from the sounds of rock and roll, jazz greats, folk icons and country stars. I can totally relate to the music here, from great grooves to unforgettable lyrics.

All in all, I was blown away by the awesome contents because I learned so much.  The breath-taking illustrations are stunning and the awesome sounds on the two CDs had me on my feet singing and dancing. I have such a fondness for smooth vocals from Ella, Billie, and Frank. Great piano work by Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Carole King.

You'll love the book and wish you had another copy to give to a friend. It's that great... I highly recommend for the young and adults, too. If you're passionate about music and it's history, get the book. Thanks for the wonderful memories, guys. As an educator, I proudly share it in my studio with all my students, their parents, and my grandchildren. Appreciative of your great work here. What a gift!

Franz Schubert (First Discovery: Music)

• Review

Schubert, a true Romantic artist who drew his beautiful music from painful situations. He knew he wasn't going to live long and it saddened his heart. He appreciated the sounds that were stirring within and created great compositions for the world to hear. 600 wonderful songs were written, like poems expressing deep feelings some written for voice and piano. The author, illustrator and narrator provide a great selection of music for all young musicians to enjoy in this very attractive book. The illustrations are gorgeous, along with historical and family background for children to learn about. If you are studying an instrument, writing songs, performing music with others or come from a musical family, the book is an excellent way to introduce children to classical music. You will enjoy listening to Schubert's music over and over. This is a great addition for the piano studio and homeschool library.

Schubert was a musical prodigy at age 10 and became a composer at 19. At 23, he had over 500 works.
Sadly, he lived in poverty and his health declined. He died at the age of 31 and according to his own wish, he was buried close to his hero, Ludwig van Beethoven.

  My Review

If you're a music teacher, a student or Opera buff, you'll appreciate this great music resource immensely. The biographical information is well-written and truly the book is a labor of love. Many of us know that Verdi  wrote opera, choral and chamber compositions, plus songs that tell a story. We've listened to his famous works of Requiem, La Traviata, Aida and Otello. But who was Giuseppe Verdi that 200,000 people came to his service? I had to know. 

The study of great music and the life of Verdi will not disappoint. Learn of Verdi's personal loss and grief that motivates and compels him to write more successful works. As you discover Verdi's constant desire to monitor the political scene, the reader comes to know the composer's love to unite his country Italy, and the charities he created from his concern for others less fortunate.

As a piano teacher and grandmother of 5, I especially like that the book is for ages 9 and up. 10 activities are provided all through the book, like making homemade pasta, playing bocce ball, creating pizza party invitations, costume designing and planting a tomato sauce garden. Not only is this a fun book for singing like a Diva but learning about Leitmotif and the kiss motif, too. It's a wonderful and valuable music resource with beautiful illustrations, offering a timeline, glossary and list of additional resources with end notes.

About the Author

Helen Bauer is the author of  Beethoven for Kids: His Life and Music with 21 Activities (For Kids series). Another book by the same author, Verdi For Kids,  explores Verdi's impact on opera and introduces Italian history and culture to budding musicians. Book published by, Chicago Review Press.

Helen Bauer, born in New York City, is a graduate of the High School of Music and Art (now known as the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts) and Hunter College. As a vocal student at Music and Art she had the privilege of working with Leonard Bernstein on a nationally televised Young People's Concert performance of Aaron Copland's opera The Second Hurricane. Mr. Copland, later that year, conducted another presentation of the opera at the Metropolitan Museum of Art which was broadcast on the radio.

She also participated in several private concerts at Carnegie Hall and a number of public performances as a member of a chorus. Her experience on the stage encompassed summer stock musicals and some off Broadway revivals. Working with a band, she also sang in the large hotels in upstate New York as well as entertaining at private parties. She often headlined at small cafes in the New York area.
Moving to Connecticut after her marriage, Mrs. Bauer directed, staged and conducted several musicals for teen-aged youth groups. One of these teen singing groups toured the Eastern seaboard. She also provided piano and music theory lessons to individuals. A certified teacher, Mrs. Bauer has taught in New York, Connecticut and Florida.

Verdi Skies

This is the Safari River in the heart of Africa at the San Diego Safari Park, looking up to a few scattered clouds. Oh, what a lovely day at the park. Joining others to share photos for SkyWatch Friday

My husband and I had another wonderful outing together at our local local preservation park. It's a huge place to spend the day walking about, seeing all the endangered species and wildlife plants.

I'm reading a book this week by  Helen Bauer that's for the young musician, ages 9 and up. I'm very impressed with the book and can't wait to post my review.

Helen Bauer is the author of Young People’s Guide to Classical Music. A classically trained musician and former piano, music theory, and reading teacher, she worked with Leonard Bernstein on his nationally televised Young People’s Concerts and performed at Carnegie Hall. Helen has also written another book, Beethoven for Kids: His Life and Music with 21 Activities (For Kids series)

Book Review: Joy in Worship

Understanding Worship According to the Word of God

Having served in various churches for over 30 years, my husband playing the guitar and myself on the keyboard, we've been delighted to share our musical gifts with the worship team. So many wonderful memories and collection of music songs we've played together, along with other fellow musicians. You can see why I was anxious to read, Joy in Worship by James Vickery.

Review

A must-read for the church leaders, growing Christians and musicians with their art. Vickery helps us to understand worship from good Biblical perspectives. You'll find wisdom and encouragement in ministry as you ponder the blessings in private and corporate worship. Preparing one's heart in humility is a prerequisite of true worship. Knowing that we are the church will ignite our hearts to worship and adore God before we enter the building. When you read through 21 chapters, you will glean a new perspective that God truly is interested in our worship to Him, instead of mesmerizing crowds with an abundance of a feel-good, entertainment style of music being played nowadays in place of special, heavenly worship to God.

I enjoyed the layout of the book and the solid principles written within. It is true that worship offered to God is the purpose of human existence. This would be a great addition in the home and church library because of its theological study and Biblical approach to worship. Leaders will get a better grasp of the worship ministry because the author shares his knowledge here.  However, I missed personal stories, warmth, and humor but nonetheless, a hearty manual for the redeemed worshiper.

Car Show and Garden Party

One of my adorable grandsons went to a car show. I think this one was his favorite. Maybe he was drawn to the color blue but smart to rest in the shade, don't you think?
