Can you imagine a special brightly colored bus joining in the fun at a parade? The children enjoy many summer activities and especially spending time on the bus with all the toys. One day, Alex the bus driver experiences a bit of a crisis and it is at this point that the reader wonders who will come to the rescue? With children wearing bright colored costumes, anxiously awaiting the arrival of Jay-Jay, will they be disappointed? Most importantly of all, who will be the best looking float at the exciting fun-loving carnival? We all love Jay-Jay. This is a delightful story!

Great cover art! The illustrations are filled with delightful expressions and complement the story perfectly. My grandsons especially love the characters chasing after the children! The author spins a fun story that is so engaging. The green aliens, grumpy gorillas, and an enormous fat caterpillar are some of our favorites. They will surely entertain ages 3-8. We can't wait to read where the teacher takes the children next time!

About The Author

As a primary school teacher, I have always told a few stories as well as written a few with or alongside the pupils. This story was written together with my class following a trip to explore the neighborhood. It was always a favorite and many years later, now updated, it was time to share the children's imaginative ideas. The walk, which inspired the story, is still there Where would your journey take you? What could happen?

My Review

Living in Northern Europe like the town of Norway over 1500 years ago was so amazing! As the hearty seafaring people went on expeditions, the people began to spread out and populate. The children will discover the Vikings, Scandinavians, and Norsemen. There are interesting word
origins to learn, along with classes of Viking families because family is so important to Norwegians. You can see ship illustrations, animal horns, a loom, and a bow and arrow within the well-paced storyline. I like the endnotes that tell of some important Vikings in History and the glossary is most useful, too. My favorite line: "You measured your age by the number of winters you lived through."

This book is filled with facts about the people and their culture. So much useful information for young people (late elementary-middle school) and adults, too.

I enjoyed the book and will share it with my 8-year-old grandson. We have a few friends that are Norwegian. I learned a lot from the author and enjoyed the soft pastel illustrations by Mateya Arkova. Such a wonderful engaging activity for the children to learn history!

As you can see, I've posted a few quirky illustrations from the picture book, best suited for ages 3-8.

My Review

This is a cute educational story about the email process, short and to the point. A sweet little spider named Webster snaps a picture of his sister making a funny face, of course. He decides to send it to a friend but later learns that each recipient sent it to someone else. Now, Webster wishes he never sent it at all! He soon realizes he made a big mistake knowing it will reach his mother's account and he'll for sure be in deep trouble. Webster learns a very important lesson about the proper use of technology. I think this is a charming, easy to read the story for children 3-8,  learning about sharing on the internet safely. It's so appropriate for what's happening today on social media sites and extremely important to think through your choices when sharing before you push 'send.' I like the storyline and overall content.

Hannah Whaley is based in Scotland, and has always worked to combine education, technology and research. She graduated with a degree in Applied Computing in 2004 and was named UK Learning Technologist of the Year in 2007, before moving into University library management in 2009. Her books help introduce children to technology from an early age through reading and stories.

Book #5 in the series, Balu Baldauf by author and illustrator Ruthz SB

My Thoughts

The story is about a boy who wrote a letter to Santa and wondered what gift he was going to get. Have you ever felt that way? I know my grandsons have written many letters to Santa and thought the same way. At first, Balu was disappointed in finding out that his present was just a big blue ball and an old one at that but he named her 'world' and gave her a big hug.

Unexpectedly, 'world' asked, "Who are you?" Balu shared his name but that isn't what world meant... It wasn't about his age.

Balu tells 'world' all about his family but he repeats the question to him again, "Who are you?"

Balu tells her all about his love for music and all the other things that he likes. Again world says to him that it's not about hobbies.

The little guy was so perplexed at this stupid question! He tried and tried to give the right answer. Then he starts to think about world's perspective on things and realizes they both are special, too!

My Review

A sweet story that goes to the heart of the matter. Discovering who you are and not what you do is a strong healthy platform to grow and stand on throughout your entire life. The author's creative story line in producing a wonderful dialogue between a small boy and our huge world is brilliant. Weaving many colorful illustrations to enhance the words for early readers is engaging for the child and parents, too. The journey for the little one to discover that he/she is special and loved reaps great rewards in child development with good self-esteem and developing friendships with all people.

I really like this one! 5/5 stars.

My Review

My 6 year old grandson easily read through this delightful book with a huge smile on his face. He really enjoyed reading about the main character, Balu and his very interesting relationship with a friend, World. The simple yet colorful illustrations capture your attention and pinpoint exactly Balu's  attitude and approach with World. It's a cute story for the young child and adults, too. What a refreshing perspective in weaving the story line of co-existence and arriving at a healthy, peaceful resolution of understanding in getting along on this wonderful planet.

5/5 stars. Highly recommend to friends.

 I try to visit our local library at least once a week. I love hearing my grandchildren read aloud and of course, I'm always available to read a story with the children by my side. I've put together a little list of some very cool books for 1st and 2nd graders.

Another beautifully written story by J. Bradley Wigger, taking the reader on a delightful journey. It's a story of love and encouragement for every child and adult. Starting with creation, so thankful for the sun's light and being grateful for God's love keeping us all together through the night. This beautiful book is a must for every home and Sunday school library. The lyrical style helps children to be grateful for food, family, friends and their homes. The beautiful illustrations are so vibrant and charming, filled with soft warm colors. I especially like reading the part about sharing stories and singing songs. Over all, the book renews a hopeful perspective of trusting God and letting your heart dance, surrounded by His love and grace. Definitely brings the whole family together with purpose!

J. Bradley Wigger is professor of religious education at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He is the author of Together We Pray: a Prayer Book for Families (Chalice Press)

Biography

Brad Wigger grew up in Alton, Illinois, along the Mississippi River near St. Louis. He is from a family of teachers and has himself been at it for some twenty years--currently as a professor at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Kentucky. He specializes in courses and work with children and is currently doing field research in the wildly imaginative world of children's invisible friends. His latest scholarly work, "Original Knowing," explores the deep roots of the human mind, and what this suggests about a religious imagination. It is followed by a picture book for children, "Thank You, God" scheduled to be released August 1st.
