Review: The Gluten-Free Revolution

Review: The Gluten-Free Revolution

 About The Book

An expanded, revised, and exhaustively updated 20th anniversary edition of the book that fired the first shot—a comprehensive and entertaining guide to living gluten-free

Way ahead of its time, the original edition of this book, Against the Grain, was the first book of its kind: a funny, supportive, and absolutely essential handbook for gluten-free living. With two successful editions and countless devoted fans, this book has helped thousands of gluten-free readers follow their diets with creativity, resourcefulness, and, always, good humor. The Gluten-Free Revolution is fully revised and updated with the newest resources and information, and is packed with authoritative, practical advice for every aspect of living without gluten. With her signature wit and style, Lowell guides readers through the intricacies of shopping; understanding labels, from cosmetics to prescription drugs; strategies for eating out happily and preparing food safely at home; advice about combining gluten-free eating with any other diet, like gluten-free-paleo and gluten-free-dairy-free; negotiating complicated emotional and interpersonal reactions to your new diet; and includes fabulous gluten-free recipes from the best chefs in the world, including Thomas Keller, Rick Bayless, Alice Waters, Bobby Flay, and Nigella Lawson, among many others. The Gluten-Free Revolution remains the ultimate and indispensable resource for navigating your gluten-free life.

The Friday #56

"Up to now, there has been much disagreement in the scientific community and only anecdotal evidence from parents about  whether or not the gluten-free-casein-free diet really helps children with this condition."

Do you like cookbooks? I sure do and I have a mountain of them. I usually devour them, while experimenting with the recipes, and then making an index card of my favorite food meal to use for family and friends. Then I like to pass the book along to a friend. I wonder... do you have a favorite cookbook that you use over and over? With this one, I must admit I was not familiar with all the details about a Gluten-Free diet. Are you familiar with Celiac Disease and does gluten bother you?

My Review

This is the best home guide and travel abroad manual for those choosing to navigate their gluten-free life successfully. I am new to the subject and have had my curiosity deeply satisfied with an enormous amount of documented beneficial medical facts and real life experience testimony shared from the author. I found much of the information easy to understand with down to earth facts and spun with good old fashion humor! I am looking forward to sampling and can't wait to try the many delicious recipes offered inside. As I begin my gluten-free journey, I am grateful to have this fantastic food Bible in my hands. It's just what I need! Jax Peters Powell has written and shared an evergreen testimony of truth with us from her heart that will indeed benefit and revolutionize a healthy community of family and friends for a very long time. I highly recommend this one!

5/5 stars.

"Piggie! What happened to your snout?!" -- Mo Williams

I Broke My Trunk! (An Elephant and Piggie Book)

My Review

Gerald, the gray elephant with glasses, shares with Piggie how his trunk broke because she really wants to know. So she listens attentively and with expectation to Gerald's crazy story. It's a delightful conversation between these two characters that will hold young people's attention. The scenarios that follow next leave the reader laughing aloud and adults will enjoy, too. The illustrations are simple in style and adorable. I especially like the one of Gerald lifting Hippo on his trunk. Soon Rhino shows up and yes, you guessed it. Plus, add Rhino's sister, along with her piano. Piggie impatiently asks, "How did you break your trunk?!" You've just got to get this funny book and read the conclusion. My 6 year old grandson loves this one. I do, too!

5/5 stars. Recommend to friends.

Review: The Berenstain Bears and the Biggest Brag

LadyD Books Review: The Berenstain Bears and the Biggest Brag

Book Description

A new addition to the bestselling Berenstain Bears' Living Lights series that teaches simple Christian truths to children.

In this newest Berenstain Bears Living Lights book, The Berenstain Bears and the Biggest Brag, Grizzly Gramps teaches Brother and Sister a valuable lesson about bragging and boasting. When he happens to overhear the cubs bickering about who can spot the most unusual cloud formations, Gramps puts a stop to the argument. He reminds them that being proud of a special talent from God is one thing, but bragging about a talent is foolish.

My Review

What a sweet book and woven throughout the story is a valuable lesson for character building. It's an easy read for older children and young ones listen attentively while engaging with the cute illustrations, pointing to all the clouds. Bragging is never a good idea for anyone to do but two over achiever cubs find themselves in this situation. The brother and sister compete with one another rigorously by topping their stories. Finally, the cubs get locked into a debate over cloud formations. Things do get resolved and there's a great family discussion guide in the back of the book. Bottom line, feel good about the all the good you are doing but don't brag about it. Let someone else say really great things about you! I especially like the conflicts and resolving them with Grandpa bear's wisdom. A delightful, well-thought-out book and a blessing for young families and grandparents to help young children feel good about the talents God has given them without boasting.

5/5 stars. Recommend for home and church library.

The Friday #56: Unbroken

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

I received the book around Christmas time as a gift and haven't seen the movie yet. I'm really enjoying it and take it with me wherever I go. Recently I went to the DMV for my license renewal and the waiting only took about one hour. I was able to make some progress with the book that day. Sometimes I read children's books and sometimes not! :-)

About The Book

In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand.

 The Friday 56

"The little group of defenders shoved them back, sinking two destroyers and damaging nine other ships, shooting down two bombers, and forcing the Japanese to abort, their first loss of the war."
-- Laura Hillenbrand

So, what are you reading this week? Oh, by the way... the temps have warmed up considerably here in SoCal and it feels like Spring today for January! The sunrise and sunset for one glorious day was truly amazing. I would imagine that Louie Zamperini saw some beautiful skies while over in Hawaii. Broken for a Purpose: Review

Broken For A Purpose: LadyD Books

“If God loves me, why am I going through so many trials?”

If that is your question, hope awaits you in this sensitive book.

With great Scriptural reverence, Gisela walks with you through the veil of brokenness and shares transparently what God has taught her through much heartache.

You will discover

  • Your infinite value to God
  • God's purposes and methods of testing
  • The key to gaining new strength
  • How to overcome, rather than suppress, your problems

About the Author

In her simple, soft-spoken style, Gisela Yohannan humbly teaches God's Word with deep insight and practical life application. She is a godly woman whose life is being poured out to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her teachings candidly reveal her experiences, tears and joys. Those who hear her speak are left with new hope and confidence that God s promises are always bigger than their circumstances.

Gisela is married to well-known mission leader and author, K.P. Yohannan, who is the founder and international director of Gospel for Asia. K.P. and Gisela have two grown children, Daniel and Sarah. Both along with their families, are serving the Lord on the Asian mission field.

Gisela's teachings have ministered to thousands of Christians--especially women--in Asia and the West. She has authored four books: Consider Your Call, Broken for a Purpose, Mate and Helpmate and Dear Sister.

"There is truly no greater privilege we can have, than to grow deeper in our love for Jesus," Gisela says, "and in turn share His heart of compassion with the lost world. He is able to use our lives beyond what we can imagine if we are completely His."

The Friday 56

"Your smile and your kindness. Is it just culture, or is it from the heart?"

My Review

What a timely book for me to read right after having major surgery. I highly recommend this one for anyone facing major challenges in their life. If you're looking for some answers for renewing a right direction for your life, then this is the one for you. Reflecting on my present circumstances, I found the author's words encouraging, comforting and hopeful on every page. Sometimes when one is facing a very introspective moment or season, it does a soul some good to have a brighter light move us forward with a new perspective and future that is much bigger than our present situation. This makes a great gift and a must for home and church library.

5/5 stars. Highly recommend.

Moon over Palomar Mountain: LadyD Books

I took these sky photos with my Nikon D200 facing east while waiting for the sunrise, only to find the moon in view. These snaps were taken before the big snowstorm we received in SoCal. I missed some photo ops while I was being rushed to the ER for an appendectomy. What an exciting New Year's Eve! Back home that night and am now resting and getting back into the swing of things.

Happy New Year, dear readers!
